Bipolar disorder symptoms
Symptoms of bipolar disorder include a range of mood episodes such as manic, hypomanic, and major depressive episodes.
During a manic episode, an individual may experience heightened energy and an unusually elevated mood. Common symptoms include irritability, rapid thinking, fast speech, a reduced need for sleep, and increased restlessness. These episodes often involve grand delusions and an exaggerated sense of self-esteem, which may lead to risky behaviors and last for a minimum of one week.
Hypomanic episodes share characteristics with manic episodes but are less intense and usually do not result in dangerous behaviors. Typically, these episodes persist for about four days, unlike the longer duration of manic episodes.
Major depressive episodes are marked by a duration of at least two weeks. Individuals may feel profound sadness, despair, worthlessness, and guilt. Additional symptoms during these episodes include fatigue, altered sleep patterns, changes in appetite, restlessness, and thoughts of suicide.
